Xbox 360 Faults – The Breakages And Errors Created By Them

by Ralf Miller

When vast electronic enterprises create devices that are used by millions around the world, they have a reputation to uphold. Unfortunately for Microsoft, their Xbox 360 isn’t known to be the most reliable device ever made. It’s obviously difficult to create a games console that’s immune to problems as its design is very complicated and always subject to improvement. However, it has experienced higher failure rates than other consoles and is in fact notorious for certain errors that pop up during every day use. Ever since the first release of the Xbox 360, the RROD and E74 errors have become infamous and as such, it’s important for new buyers considering older consoles to fully know the problems that might occur. The Xbox 360 faults aren’t vast, but when they do occur, they can be console-breaking and this is reason enough to do some research before committing.

Red Ring Of Death

Infamous for its representation of a ‘dead’ Xbox 360, the Red Ring Of Death is what many 360 owners fear. This is because it stands for a general hardware failure, which a part of the Xbox 360’s internal physical components has broken for some reason and the machine is no longer capable of functioning as normal. The RROD manifests itself as a three-quarter, red circle and generally means the console needs fixing. Many amateurs have tried their attempts at fixing their consoles, but it’s generally recommended that you either send it in for the Microsoft warranty or to a professional tech shop.

The reason for the RROD is less agreed upon. The nature of the problems lead Microsoft to often keep such sensitive matters undisclosed and therefore there is no solid evidence as to the exact problem. However, investigations support overheating as the main origin of such issues. The components are thought to be unsuitable for such electrical currents or temperatures and eventually break down. With the newer iterations, such problems have lessened as efficiency has improved.

Scratched Discs

There were some issues with the disc tray. Discs became victim to being scratched while inside the machine and when removed, they would have uniform scratches across the majority of the disc, meaning it was unusable. The uniform nature of these scratches suggest it was a piece of the tray or something else pressed against the disc. The source of the problems is somewhat subjective. In studies, it was proven that discs could indeed be scratched during the course of normal use through everyday household vibrations. However, Microsoft insists its user error, such as moving the console while it’s on and the disc is spinning, which the manual warns against.

E74 System Error

This is an error in which the lower-right of the ring flashes red. The E74 System Error is caused by the video, when there’s damage to the hardware. While it is included under the warranty, it can strike in many cases, but gives the user early warning signs, such as video artifacts. Essentially, the video quality will degrade severely and this should be enough warning that the E74 error is about to occur.
