When Breasts Are Too Large

Women with overly large, pendulous breasts, especially those with gigantomastia, often opt for breast reduction surgery. The weight of their breasts may cause continuous pressure to the head, neck, back, and shoulders. Heavy breasts can also make breathing and blood circulation difficult.

The breasts may also cause the straps of the brassiere to pull down on the skin. This may cause soreness, welts and even shallow wounds. If done because of these reasons, breast reduction procedures may be part of a health care plan.

Some women may feel put off about their breasts if they seem too big for them and do not complement their slight frames. In these cases, the surgery is cosmetic in nature.

As a general rule, breast reduction is only performed on adults whose breasts have developed completely. If a candidate breastfeeds or has plans to breastfeed, reduction surgery might be ruled out.

Males afflicted with gynecomastia may feel awkward and humiliated by their condition, usually occurring in their teenage years. They may get the surgery for their self-esteem

The technique used may vary, depending on whether the breasts are made of adipose tissues glandular tissues. If the mammary glands cover a large area of the chest, this will affect what surgery will be performed.
