When mobile communications devices first hit the market, they were so expensive only large companies or rich individuals had deep enough pockets to pay thousands a dollars a month for service. However, thanks to advances in manufacturing and components the devices are getting smaller and more affordable. And future cell phone technology shows no signs of slowing down, because of demand.
Traveling between different countries can be something of a hassle now, because of all the different kinds of systems that send and receive data. Coverage is also spotty in some locations. One major innovation may change that so there are no more dropped calls. It is called network hopping, and will be intended to allow users to get connected anywhere, anytime, in any country, regardless of the kind of phone.
When the first cell phone towers went up, the first devices were not small, but were large and bulky, compared to ones today. They will likely continue to get smaller, and a lot thinner. The battery life will also be extended. Some phones will not even have to be plugged in to an electrical outlet. They may have small solar panels on the back so they can be recharged by sunlight.
Clothing manufacturers are already making pants and shirts with special pockets to hold phones. In the future though, the devices may also be developed by designers for customers who want to make more of a fashion statement. They are already small enough to hide out of sight almost anywhere. In the future though, the case can be made out of a hard plastic circle that fits on the wrist, like a bracelet.
The phones can only have apps and features that can handle the data transfer speed by the networks. So in order to add more functions, service providers will likely build new towers and infrastructure to handle faster data speeds. The faster technology means smaller handsets will be able to display full length motion pictures, without having to wait for a download or a buffer.
The digital and video cameras will take pictures and movies that have a more professional look to them. Now, they do not have high enough resolution quality to match the quality of broadcast cameras. Users may be able to take video of their vacations, upload them in real time to a website, and edit them together later.
In a few years, phones may also have the kinds of apps that lets users leave their wallets and purses behind. They may have a secure, identity system, to make e-payments easier. So instead of carrying cash, a customer at the grocery store can simply use an app that has a digital information for their debit or credit card.
Advances in the design and use of mobile communications devices is moving quickly, thanks to the demand from people around the world for inexpensive, but reliable, phones. Future cell phone technology will add more features to them so that users will have all the power of a laptop in their pocket or purse.
