What Potential Students Need To Apply For Medical Schools

Any newly arriving freshman to college who aspires to become a physician should have a firm grasp on what it takes to get admitted to Med school. The good news is that most accredited medical schools in the United States all have the same minimum requirements. Of course, some medical schools are more difficult to get onto than others; these institutions are looking for applicants whose credentials rise above just the minimum. With all this in mind, let’s take a look at the admission process.

One of the misconceptions among students is that they need to major in one of the sciences if they are going to apply to medical school. This is not true. Of course some science course work must be done, but if you wish to major in History or Economics this will not eliminate you from consideration.

As a general rule, there are a few classes that must be taken. The list includes a year of biology, a year of physics and two years of chemistry, including organic chemistry. At least one semester in calculus is also recommended.

All applicants must also take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test.) This exam is used to determine the aptitude of students in physics and biology as well as verbal reasoning. One piece of the test includes writing.

For the best chances of acceptance, it is wise to do more than simply these basics. It might help your cause of you take further science classes, particularly some that are more challenging. Volunteering at a local hospital will also look good on an application as will participation in groups and clubs on campus.

Needless to say, getting into medical school can be a challenge. The people who tend to get chosen have top MCAT scores and top grades. They also do well in the interview, another piece of the application process. Staying dedicated and working hard may help you on your way to attending med school.
