"The Art of Hojo Undo: Power Training for Traditional Karate" by Michael Clarke is an interesting and informative book on the "additional training" to develop the energy in his karate techniques. In addition to teaching the classical training methods, this book also details how construct and use the training tools that have been used to develop energy in karate traditional "old" Okinawa.
There is a short introduction that puts hojo undo, or additional training in context with the history of karate and how training is designed to push your limits. The book then goes on to review the preparedness exercises. These are warm-ups you see a lot of martial artists occurs to the class or training. The exercises are well described and illustrated by drawings. Japanese terms are used for many positions and movements.
The author divides the tools used in the book into two groups, those before them and picked up and those that involve varying degrees of impact. Third Chapter focuses on the removal tools. The first tool is a Makiagi discussed. It's basically a stick with a rope and a weight at the end rope. Directions with the diagrams are presented to assist you in building your own, and a couple of years are displayed. Next stones are Chiishi or force. It is essentially a stick with a weight attached to one end. The double handle chiishi has weight in the middle. Various exercises are shown as well as instructions for making your own chiishi.
Gami Nigiri (gripping jars). Tan (barbell), Ishisashi (Lock stone), kongoken (iron ring length), and Tetsu geta (sandals iron) tools are lifting their other shows how to be produced and used.
I enjoyed the old photographs which showed that these tools being used years ago. I also like that Clarke is keeping the history of This training in life with this book. However, I think there has been progress training methods and tools that can help athletes today obtain results superior to those of yesteryear. It can be motivating and give a person a sense of their historical value as they train made many years ago. And all the training is better than no training. However, I also think to take advantage of modern equipment and training methods. That said, adding that some kind of training routine, it does not add variety and support tray.
The fourth chapter focuses on the impact tools. There were instructions on how to build a makiwara with training exercises. Probably the best known tools impact older. Other tools include training tou (bundle bamboo), Jari Bako (sandbox), Kita Ude (pounding post), and the bikei kakita (lock position). I again appreciated the older photos of these training tools and methods. Clarke provides a good education and the karate practitioner who wants to harden as they did day and more, this book shows you how.
Speaking of tightening, the fifth chapter contains conditioning exercises the body that have been used for many years to toughen up with a training partner without tools. This short chapter provides instructions on performing these exercises. The sixth chapter continues with some exercises without auxiliary tools. I bet you did some in your martial arts class. The last two short chapters show some tools and methods and a few other comments on hojo undo two masters Okinawan karate.
As someone who enjoys studying the history of martial arts, I found this book extremely interesting regarding the training tools and methods from traditional Okinawan karate. For anyone who wants to better understand the traditional training, This product has tremendous value. As someone who trains as to better myself and stay strong and healthy, I agree with Clarke that Hojo Undo allows those who make this way of mutual understanding and pursuit of budo. I think that training methods may be older integrated with modern training methods to achieve its intended results of training. This is a very good addition to library martial arts person, and a must for those that karate school classic.
