What is best bike excercise …. recumbent or upright?

Looking to buy a bike and wondered what the difference between foot and lying (other than obvious). Do they offer different benefits? What would you recommend?

The better the more you like. I would check local eBay or Craig's List for a second hand or from the local Goodwill or Salvation Army stores. People buy these things all the time and never use.
