Charlotte Hornets

The team, which joined the league the 1988-89 season in the NBA, was named the Charlotte Spirit, but was renamed the Charlotte Hornets fans of local opposition. They wanted to pay tribute to the British General Cornwallis who remarked "There's a rebel behind every bush is a real hornets' nest, "referring to the resistance in North Carolina. They also had a home uniform with the number of player placed off-center, moving away somewhat from the uniform of the original house the Bulls.
