Nearly everyone has been to a, or has at least seen on television, a celebration where there is a large and magnificent display of fireworks. The sounds and colors of the display are a remarkable sight. From the 4th of July in the summer to New Years Eve in the winter, there always seems to be a need and love for a great fireworks display. However, many people don’t understand how fireworks actually work. This includes the large display fireworks at those celebrations as well as the smaller consumer grade fireworks. Different types of fireworks will work in different ways.
The large aerial fireworks seen in the huge displays have many different designs, but they all work on the same general principle. They consist of a shell that has four different parts – the container, the bursting charge, the fuse, and the stars. The container holds all the material together, the fuse is what is lit, the bursting charge contains the explosives, and the stars are what make all those gorgeous colors and shapes.
The shell, containing this material, is launched from a mortar that shoots the shell high into the air. The fuse burns as the shell rises, and then it will ignite and explode, and that’s what people see. While there are many different types and variations of these display fireworks, including multi-break shells, this is the basic design that you will often see.
If fireworks are deployed properly and safely, they can add great excitement and fun to any type of gathering. There are several seasonal times of the year that fireworks are particularly popular, but they are also used at sporting events, parties, and other gatherings where people come together to celebrate.
Fireworks are always dangerous. The sparks that fly off of sparklers can easily burn out an eye and some explosive fireworks have enough power to cause a serious injury. Make sure you always handle them according to the manufacturer’s instructions and that you never let the off in an area where there is a severe fire hazard. It’s a good idea to check to see if there is a fire warning in effect before you light off any fireworks, as violating such a warning can result in stiff fines.
