It may be true that black bears are not as dangerous for backpackers as grizzly bears, but there are many cases of attacks by black bears – some are fatal. So even if you're in black bear country, there are some things you should know. The first thing, and perhaps most importantly, how to avoid an attack.

How to avoid an attack by black bear

Be noisy. Generally, a black bear coming out of your way if she knows you're coming down the runway. Surprise, however, and it may attack. If you're hiking with a friend, a conversation is enough noise to announce your presence to the local wildlife. If you are alone, you may want to wear "bear bells" or sing a song.

Be less flashy. You are easily spotted from a long distance when you are in bright, colorful clothes. Alaska She noted that bears see the bright colors and come closer to investigate, while they often will not see hikers in darker colors. It is not clear that this is the case with black bears, but it's something to consider when purchasing this rain jacket – especially if you hike open ground.

Do not Cook where you sleep. Instead, stop along the trail to cook dinner, and then continue hiking for a while before stopping for the night. If you have already established their camp, hike a short distance to cook dinner. The idea is to keep odors from where you sleep.

Hang food out of reach. This usually means ten feet high and four feet from a tree trunk – Difficult in some areas that have few large trees. Rather than using string, it is often easier to lift the bag of food with a stick (I use my walking stick) and hang it from a button on a branch well. While some backpackers to keep food with them in plastic bags in zipped plastic bags, unless all smell last figure, bears are likely coming to visit.

Two Kinds of attacks by black bear

Bears, surprise – especially if they have cubs nearby – Attack to try to scare you. They are called "attacks bluff" and may end without contact, or the animal you may hit a few times. With this type of attack, the bear will growl a lot and seem very angry. Try to talk quietly as you slowly away, or if the attack continues, cross your fingers behind the neck to protect it, and relax on the field. The bear could just bat you around for a few seconds and then leave.

Unfortunately, this is not the only type of attack. There are also those where you're hunting and harassment. It is not common, but black bears can sometimes hunt humans for food. Where is the goal, you do not want to "play dead", or you will soon. Fight for your life!

With this type of attack, the bear will probably quiet, having his nose down, ears folded back and watch you closely, as it moves toward you. It tries determine if you are easy prey, so do not be. Yell, swing your walking sticks, and do something else you can do to convince the bear you're too much trouble for a meal.

Put something between you and the bear can help. A man who had been chased by a black bear in Michigan continued to push his video camera to bear the attack continued for almost half an hour. The camera and screaming Bear kept a few yards further, until his friends arrived (and he has a great video too). Running usually does not, but if you have no other choice, remember that black bears are slower on the descents.

Use what you can to a weapon, but be careful bending to pick up objects. Leaning over may trigger a charge. When there are two or more backpackers, try a sustained defense using stones, sticks and shouting. This may change the minds of black bears. Other things that may help understand, bear spray, a freon horn and whistles.
