Trainer Home

I remember the first time I brought home a wind-trainer. It was designed as an alternative training bike when the weather was bad.

For 95% of my walks I load my bike on the back of my car and drive to the countryside where there was a wide shoulder and less traffic. Moreover, there was no way on earth I'd ever try to get into the city. Far too dangerous and not very productive anyway. What is the point where we stop every few blocks to a traffic light.

As the years pass and the city grew, my favorite became training paths more and more busy. Almost every year a cyclist was being killed or seriously injured on the road. It seems that each year passed, I was more and more training in my apartment, logging endless miles on my wind-trainer.

Ultimately, some something I never thought I could never do, has finally arrived. I did all my training for an Ironman on my wind-trainer.

First of all let me say that I am famous for trying the radical training methods. My theory is … how do you know how something works if you try. For example, I wanted to see how the extreme distance training would help my marathon time. So for several months, I ramp kept my distance until I peaked at around 150 miles per week. To do that I ran approximately 24 hours per week. I did 2 A DAY training. So often I would use 3 0r 4 hours in the morning and then 1 or 2 o'clock in the evening. At one point I ran 25 days in a row.

Was it worth it? Well I went to Las Vegas and ran their marathon in 3:03. There was a time good enough, but honestly, I felt I break 3 hours. I'd do it again? No, I think its risky and demand a fair hurt and just reward was not there. However, it is in my nature to try. Besides, one day I can tell my grandchildren that I ran 600 miles in a month.

Anyway, back to the wind-trainer. My point the whole history of the race was to explain my thought processes. I was ready to try this radical bike training and give him a test in an Ironman, because I was curious whether it would be really different. I let you be the judge.

I have done "everything" my training inside. 100%

I used a program that builds slowly distance myself "five hours". About two years ½ I Watched movies as I cycled. I must say that there were many, many advantages to training at home.

1) saved a lot of money on gas.

2) Could come home from work – take the bike and start training immediately. No loss time loading up the bike and driving a way for 25 minutes, then backward.

3) My bike is kept clean REAL.

4) No potholes.

5) No dogs

6) No cars

7) No sudden storm. Or in my part of the world — storms snow.

8) Great for training transition. Bike – windshield-Trainer – put on running shoes – running 60 seconds later. Faster than a Ironman transition day and great training for what it will feel like.

9) Ideal for interval training. You can rate each interval exactly. Outside, you're dealing with wind and uneven terrain, so that each interval is different than the last.

10) You can get the same effect of climbing a big hill in doing low speed in a big wheel.

11) flat tire. Who cares? Sit on the couch and change it.

12) the nature of the calls? The bathroom is never far away.

Disadvantages?

Sure.

1) If your bicycle is invented, you will not show.

2) It can be boring (unless the film is really good).

3) You do not learn the little things like food and drink during the race.

4) Seriously, I think that the biggest disadvantage of not obtaining mile road is that your bike-handling skills will suffer.

Could I suggest trying the bike only on your wind trainer?

Well, when I did the race I was about 15 minutes slower than I usually was. So, really, on the grand scheme of things, it does not make any difference. I'd do it again.

If you live anywhere, it is just not a good place for cyclists, then sure, do not concentrate it. Just get a good wind-trainer and you build a program and go. Ultimately, I do not think really it will do much more than a difference come race day.

The only thing I suggest is perhaps the last month or two of training when you start your taper for the big day, get outside and improve your handling techniques bikes. Six or eight laps should. They need not be real long. Thirty and forty miles. or so. That should be ready.

You might think that this whole idea is crazy but I promised myself when I think to create a site for "new Ironman triathletes" I say what I think – and feel – not necessarily what you want to hear.

You can take it or leave it. I'm just saying …….. do not give up your dream because your region Ironman Not really made for cyclists.

In the trying and risking an Ironman on it, I know you can do if you wish, with a Unlike really very little in the final result ….
