Read here about the various factors involved with temporal headache in tinnitus learn the reasons behind this condition
Tinnitus which is frequently associated with loss of hearing and simple headache is considered to be caused due to stressful living. But when it is also accompanied by temporal headache which comes from temporal bone structure within the skull which houses the hearing mechanism in human beings, the matter needs thorough investigation as to the cause and effect parameters of the complete syndrome. To begin with, studies may be conducted on the causes that lead to tinnitus that is coupled with temporal headache.
Here are some of the factors that are known to cause the condition that are often referred to as temporal headache.
Why temporal headache and tinnitus occurs?
I. Stress has always been considered as the prime contributory factor that gives rise to tinnitus with headache originating from temporal bony structure within the skull which houses the hearing organ. But does that mean that everyone has tinnitus with temporal headache since contemporary lifestyle is almost hundred percent stressful. In actual reality it is not so because many people now know how to control stress by doing yoga or by practicing the principle of detachment before being affected by stress related disorders. II. Insomnia or continued sleep deprivation is also responsible for tinnitus that comes with temporal headache although there is a slight twist in the tale. Leaving aside the debacle that fails to determine whether insomnia causes tinnitus or tinnitus causes insomnia let us take an unbiased view of the topic. According to David Baguley, PhD, Head of Audiology at Cambridge University Hospitals and Professional Adviser to the British Tinnitus Association, people go to bed when they are surrounded by quiet whereas the same quietness makes that ‘tinnitus noise’ sharper for the affected person, turning him/her more agile and alert, preventing him/her from falling asleep. Nevertheless, continued lack of sleep can lead to many disorders including tinnitus with or without temporal headache. III. Subarachnoid hemorrhage in which bleeding occurs in the subarachnoid space that remains inside the brain usually has symptoms of tinnitus with temporal headache. This may happen unexpectedly or may be caused due to cerebral aneurysm and its rupture. Severe injury to head during car crash also causes brain hemorrhage with the surviving patient complaining of acute tinnitus with temporal headache. IV. Lumber puncture made for drawing of cerebrospinal fluid usually results in tinnitus with temporal headache though it takes around twelve hours for pain to set in.
Nevertheless, studies have revealed many who not only suffer from tinnitus with temporal headache but also fall victim to chronic neck and shoulder pain that often become unbearably hurting. And many people also experience pain in the neck, crackling, buzzing and ringing sounds and they hear it in both the ears. These are all tinnitus related problems.
Why Temporal Headache Occurs With Tinnitus
Stress is not the only culprit so far as tinnitus is concerned! Further studies on tinnitus have revealed that TMD or Temporomandibular Disorder is also responsible for tinnitus with temporal headache in many cases. In depth analysis have also made it quite clear that this headache associated with tinnitus is not a disease condition but one of its major symptoms and that once TMD is treated, the symptom will disappear. TMD, however, is caused by yet another factor called Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or TMJ.
Recent studies on otolaryngology have further revealed that since the TMJ (read jaw joint) is located a couple of inches lower than the ear, muscles, tendrils and nerve endings that connect both the organs can easily interchange impulses between them. In such a situation, any digression in the TMJ will be communicated to the ear drums, causing unusual noise inside the ear in the form of tinnitus. Furthermore, the ligament (Pinto’s Ligament) that connects the TMJ and the middle ear fine bones can also transfer any stress related event from the TMJ to the mid ear with significant effect. Termed as ‘Otomandibular Syndrome’ this has been currently observed by Harold Arlan, MD, Rudkers Medical School’s and Medicine College and Dentistry of New Jersey’s Assistant Clinical Professor in Otolaryngology Surgery.
Tinnitus with temporal headache is also linked with ototoxic solutions like antibiotics, amino glycosides, Erythromycin, Vancomycin, chemotherapy agents, loop diuretics and quinine in its various forms. The toxic effect brought about by these drugs can cause some irritation in the skull’s temporal structure thus producing pain and related discomfort.
To sum it up, it may be clearly stated that temporal headache is a symptom of tinnitus while tinnitus itself is a symptom of a disease that has many causes. Unless those are systematically searched out and eradicated, the problem can never be solved. And for doing this, the only way left is to go for holistic method of treatment which involves a total change of lifestyle.
