The Facts On Photoacoustic Technology May Ascertain Its Need For The Future

Although the concept seems to be a complicated one, in reality the facts on photoacoustic technology are clear. The idea was first discovered when Alexander Graham Bell was trying to find a wireless form of communication. When items were exposed to a constant flickering beam of light, the object would emit a sound.

This was Bell’s discovery almost a century ago. However, there was no practical way to transmit the conversation. The idea was dropped until recently when it was re-discovered for other uses. Today, it is known as the photoacoustic effect and is becoming well regarded in the biomedical imaging field.

Researchers are combining optics with ultrasonic imaging. This process is being called photoacoustic tomography and is thought to be able to provide detailed pictures. Many researchers are comparing the images to those found using MRIs and CT scans. These scans are used in diagnosing and treating many of the nation’s most deadly diseases.

While the images are comparable, the cost for this new technology is considerably less. The scans are able to go to a much deeper level than many of the other options that are currently available. The dream is that as the technology develops, it will be able to guide biopsy needles deeper into the tissues. Many also believe that, in the future, it will aid with gastrointestinal endoscopy and monitor the levels of oxygen in the body’s lymph nodes. This can help in determining whether a tumor is malignant or not.

Photoacoustic technology is designed to use fast paced pulses from a laser onto the tissues to gain a picture. The tissue will increase in temperature slightly when the laser hits it. This causes the skin cells to react by expanding and contracting, which in turn makes a sound. Sound waves are read using computerized equipment, and then form a three dimensional picture of what lies below the skin’s surface.

Probably one of the most encouraging uses for this method is treating cancer patients. Blood cells are excellent at absorbing light and make them a perfect candidate at being able to give a high-contrast image of the vessels. It can also detect a heightened metabolic activity. These are both signs of cancer.

There are also studies being conducted to find a way to combine ultrasound images with photoacoustic technologies. Researcher believe if these two sets of images are combined it will offer the clearest possible picture of what is going on inside the body. The developments of this theory are currently being used with breast cancer patients who have already been diagnosed.

There have been remarkable developments in this new technology. However, there are still some unanswered questions that will need to be addressed. For instance, if the laser goes to deeply into the tissue, the waves become disoriented and are not as easy to read. This may be due to the loss of the vibration and the scattering of the sound waves. However, although there are some issues, the facts on photoacoustic technology cannot be denied. Researchers believe in the near future, this will be the preferred method for Contrast Imaging.
