The Effectiveness Of Laser Cure For Toenail Fungus

by Nichol Potts

You have probably seen the advertisements for treating toenail fungus with a laser. However, there are some confusing claims and a considerable amount of misinformation that are being made about laser treatments.

Currently, there are two companies that are in competition for the treatment of toenail fungus with a laser. These two companies are Nomir Medical Technologies and Patholase who has their Pinpointe laser already in the marketplace.

There isn’t much information available about the effectiveness of Nomir Medical Technologies’ Neovon laser. Nomir is awaiting FDA approval prior to putting their laser in the marketplace. However there have been some impressive studies conducted which seem to indicate that it does work. The Neovon laser seems to be effective based on the information that has been released thus far.

Some physicians are rather skeptical about the claims that the PinPointe Company is making with regard to the fact that their laser will cure toenail fungus even though they had their laser in the marketplace first. There is very little information to support their claim that their laser can actually cure toenail fungus. Also, their laser hasn’t yet been approved by the FDA to treat toenail fungus in the US. In addition, the Pinpointe laser uses high energy ultraviolet radiation which means that there are possible complications resulting in burning to the tissue that surrounds the toenail. Some patients may want to avoid using this laser treatment for toenail fungus as a result of the lack of information that demonstrates how effective it is.

The technology that the Neovon laser uses is rather impressive. The Noveon laser clears the toenail fungus by using two wavelengths of low energy that are close to infrared beams and use light as opposed to ultraviolet radiation that the Pinpointe laser uses. This avoids any damage to the tissue that surrounds the toenail. Some physicians believe that this permits a more effective treatment for toenail fungus with less probability of complications and a better chance of a positive outcome. The toenail fungus is killed with light energy without the use of damaging ultraviolet radiation. The tissue and skin that surrounds the toenail will be left uninjured as a result of the controlled technology that the Noveon laser uses which is unique.

Until the Laser by Neovon laser is available, you should consider putting off the laser treatment of your toenails if have toenail fungus. The cost for either laser treatment is about the same, and can be between $750 and $1500, although the cost is dependent on the number of toenails that undergo laser treatment. There is no pain associated with the laser treatment. Most patients will require three to five laser treatments that will last no longer than 20 minutes.
