What is the difference between Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chaun?

I am sure that our instructor keeps saying that tai chi is the art of meditation and not as smooth tai chi chaun that the fighting arts. Can someone explain the differences or where I am wrong in interpreting what she says. Thanks

Pugpaws is pretty much said it all. They are one and the same. Also spelled Taijiquan or Taiji. Taijiquan is an MA in the first place. Health benefits are a byproduct of ones hard work. There are many people who dont understand that fact. Everyone learns that as a health benefit simply doesn't understand the concept of what it really is and should probably be avoided. Many offs of this new age snatch prey on people who no idea what is Taijiquan. Taijiquan takes many years of daily training under a good instructor to truly learn. A good instructor is the key to good learning Taijiquan. Without an instructor that understands the concepts of Taijiquan, then ur pretty much wasting ur time. I know people who have trained for many years claimed that to be "masters" and they go and teach people but they dont even grasp the basic concepts of art. I learned more in 6 months studying under a good instructor and listen to its elplanations than others who wasted years of their life flawed practice routines. Taijiquan is a very complex MA based on the theory of Yin and Yang. It is a balance of both fast and slow, hard and soft, open and closed. Without proper balance just isn't Taijiquan. Do some research on Taijiquan. Read more about it on Wikipedia. Chen Style Taijiquan is the oldest style from which all others are made. If you are then I suggest you learn Taijiquan find a very good instructor that 10 years of experience, so they have a good grip on the art. Finding of a good instructor is important to study under a particular style to study. Good luck
