Excessive underarm sweating is a condition whereby a person sweats excessively in the armpits. In most cases, this condition causes an unpleasant odor. I have also suffered from excessive underarm sweating, and I became very depressed as a result. I became extremely self conscious, and my self esteem slowly began to diminish.
To stop excessive underarm sweating, one must first know the reasons that are causing his or her sweating. In most cases it is passed down through your genes. Axillary hyperhidrosis is the most common name for this condition.
A lot of companies claim to be able to stop excessive underarm sweating, but most have horrible side effects. In the past I tried about every available treatment out there with little to no results.
Over the counter and prescription antiperspirants have been used by many to stop mild underarm sweating. Chemicals such as formalin, glutaraldehyde, and aluminium are used in these treatments to block pores and attempt to stop the perspiration from hitting the skins surface. Most have moderate to severe side effects. Skin irritation is the biggest side effect of these treatments, and they also need to be applied several times a day to be effective. It is therefore, not a long-term solution, and could be very costly over time.
Another treatment method is iontophoresis. It involves the patient immersing the affected part of the body into tap water, while mild electric shocks are sent through it. This treatment is not for everyone, including women who are pregnant, epileptics, and people with heart conditions. It also happens to have little to no effect on stopping excessive underarm sweating.
Botox injections have been used for trying to stop excessive underarm sweating as well. In this treatment, botulinum toxin is injected into the arm pit to stop the release of acetylcholine. The main side effect is that it causes extreme pain and has little effect. You will have to get repeat injections every six months, and will become very expensive over time.
The most extreme treatment to stop excessive underarm sweating is having surgery. It should only be used as a last resort. There are two kinds of surgery. Clipping is one option for surgery. It involves placing titanium clips across the sympathetic nerves which will cause them to stop sending signals to the glands which produce sweat. Another surgery involves cutting the nerves with scissors. The only problem with this is that your body will compensate by sweating excessively in another area of your body. These surgeries are know to cause internal bleeding and neck pain.
