In our modern era persistent stress and fatigue is a problem of real significance that hammers down upon many people without regard to their individual socioeconomic status. This stress can eventually lead down the path to depression, and reduced overall satisfaction of life. As a consequence of this depression an entire country can suffer by reduced attendance at work, and greater healthcare expenses. The answer to this matter is a debate that is ongoing. One good solution that has proven to be effective time and time again is using personal fitness as an agent of stress reduction. This technique is actually counter-intuitive, because exercises actually causes temporary stress on the body, which would seemingly be ill-advised. Indeed, it pumps up your pulse rate, and pushes your endocrine system to flush adrenaline which is a fight-or-flight chemical much famed for its role in the stress response that I am quite sure we have all heard mention of by now. So why should exercise reduce the amount of stress an individual experiences?

The reason for this is because individuals experiencing chronic activation of their stress systems possess a system that’s perpetually stuck open. While as the vast majority of physically and mentally healthy individuals have periods of stress in waves with periods of relaxed or reduced levels of stress in between, chronically stressed men and women maintain an elevated level of stress hormones like cortisol or adrenaline throughout the entire day, and into the evening. This is an issue that sauna use, or exercising, or a combination can help.

Both exercising and sauna use cause you to dump high levels of catecholamines like adrenaline into your bloodstream. This helps to restore the cycle that a stress system is supposed to have. What’s interesting about saunas in particular, however, is that they cause your body to release an even greater amount of endorphins than exercising alone can.

Endorphins are the addictive chemical the body releases that decreases pain, decreases feelings of depression, and improves feelings of well-being. If you’re experiencing the feeling of being stressed out endorphins are most likely what you need, and a sauna and physical activity can assist you in achieving adequate blood levels. However, to get those adequate levels of endorphins, a person must first endure a extra physiological stress for a period of time. This leads to a catch-22 situation, individuals who are chronically stress often seemingly incapable of handling an increased amount of stress, but it is largely the solution to ailment of their disposition.
