Rope Timer

Forty-two days of adventure, amazing sights, great challenges, new skills and a great new friendships was our Travel Climbing for November-December 2007.

We started the adventure in the city of Coyhaique an examination on navigation, backcountry survival, medicine wilderness rations and packaging. Ahh, the packaging of rations, 42 days worth of Gorp, rolled oats, salami and cheese. It was an adventure in itself.

The first phase was 15 days in the Leones valley, just south of Coyhaique. An exercise in bush crash (loved it) and snow skills, self arrest anchors, snow shoeing. The unseasonable warm conditions made the going slow through the snow, but gave us many opportunities to engage in housing starts and use the Alpine rope skills to negotiate the slush and soft. With the task leader of the day rotating through the group, several decisions have been made to handle varying conditions. At the edge of the cap Northern Ice, one of our party decided that the trip was not good for her. So … rapid change of planes and a boat ride on the Lake later we were on Phase 2 of the expedition.

A couple of days running up to the spectacular valley Soler saw us on the edge of the icecap, at a place called the keyhole where we met with our other 25 days of food that the horses were packed in. While waiting for a good frost to cross the line on the glacier firn Neff, we spent a few days to hone our glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills, as well as rigging our sleds to transport food and fuel.

Finally the 2 PM Check weather we gave the freeze we needed. A wave of excited packaging we saw weaving our way through the puzzle of the firn line and the glacier itself said, as the dawn. Being on the ice after CAP as much work to get there was breathtaking, we had clear weather, with surprising conditions perfect. Despite the heavy burden both in our backpacks and sleds, the group has progressed well and we made camp in the shelter of Pico Naranja.

The next day we found ourselves in the most difficult phase of the trip, because a storm during the night. We have been very light for the next 8 day reconstruction of walls of snow and then, as the cooling temperatures and the snow intensified, digging the tents. Despite difficult conditions, while the world has agreed that it was the highlight of the trip, a time to learn to cope in extreme conditions and keep them happy. During the storm, we managed to do a lot of classes and developed a number of different route plans based on what the weather has given us.

After 6 days of storm and a forecast of bad weather, we decided to descend to the glacier for some Exploradores days of ice climbing and rescue skills.

Our time on Exploradores was the perfect ending to a difficult and eventful expedition. Leaving the road for the last time, nobody wanted to go home. If only we had more food, we may just have turned around and returned in the desert …
