The rocket is built from a good way for someone in my situation abdominal muscles?

I'm trying to get in good enough shape to for officer candidates School to qualify for the Navy. There are three criteria Fitness: crunches, pull-ups, and run a 3 mile. Are running training for pull-ups and 3 miles no problem. I have a lot of trouble with the crunches (which is the easiest of the three) – in fact I am not very much to improve by 3 sets of crunches sit / ups each Night. I only do 3 because I'll be relying upon, when my back begins to hurt (some nights I did not do, 3). I need from a good workout, strength will build (hopefully soon), did not hurt that my back is. From rocket to do the TV promise, with 5 minutes training sessions per day. Any thoughts from those who have the Machine may have used? If anyone knows of an alternate training, please let me know. I've tried a few different techniques, such as leg lifts, but I 'm not sold that that the way will be traveling.
