Why body size, age and fitness factors in heart rate?

As heart rate is a variable, if someone is larger in the blood has to flow further, and has more pressure to deliver blood. As we age, cholesterol builds up in arteries and makes each heart pump less effectively, and someone with good skills need less beats per minute to deliver all the blood / oxygen they need. Michael Phelps, for example, probably has a heart rate below 40 bpm, whereas as person of the same age who are less involved in a regiment of exercise can have a heart rate about 80 BPM.
