Last summer: Commanding tale based on Evan Hunter novel of adolescents playing on the shore in a summer resort. The film follows their games, sensual awakenings, and how evil materializes itself with incredible determination. Cathy Bums was a standout. Cast includes Richard Thomas, Barbara Hershey, Bruce Davison, Cathy Burns, Ralph Waite, and Conrad Bain. (97 minutes, 1969)
Shadowboxer: Hit lady Mirren and her companion Gooding have an irregular personal and virtuoso relation, however he’s unprepared for her to make the decision she does when proposed with a task that requires her to shoot a young pregnant woman. The 2 megastars are at their extremely best in this highly unconventional, vicious sleeper, best taken as stylized storytelling and not as a cut of genuine life. Cast includes Helen Mirren, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Stephen Dorff, Vanessa Ferlito, and Macy Gray. (93 minutes, 2006)
The King and I: Phenomenal film adaptation of Rodgers and Harnmerstein Broadway musical, based on novel filmed in 1946 as Anna and the Baron of Siam (and redid as Anna and the Emperor). Kerr plays widowed English schoolteacher who voyages to Siam to instruct the Baron’s numerous kids, and finds handling His Highness her best test. Brynner gives the acting job of a generation, and was rewarded with an Oscar reconstructing his Broadway role. Kerr is charming and her harmonizing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon. Melodies contain “Hello, Youthful Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance.” Cast includes Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Martin Benson, Terry Saunders, Rex Thompson, and Alan Mowbray. (133 minutes, 1956)
Red Sonja: SpectacuJarly stupid sword and magic myth with lady lead, based on mush writings of Robert E. Howard (of Conana popularity). May entertain adolescent watchers, although only point of interest for grownups is choosing who gives the worse acting job, Nielsen or villainess Bergman. Cast includes Brigitte Nielsen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Paul Smith, Emie Reyes, Jr., Ronald Lacey, and Pat Roach. (89 minutes, 1985)
Ed Television: Amusing yam in reference to a despondent cable Television network that plans to televise a normal man’s life for every waking minute of the day and turn the meager sap into an overnight star.
