The UFC welterweight division is loaded with talent. Some of the best 170 pound fighters in the MMA world and some of the best pound for pound fighters are now in the UFC welterweight division. Let me take a look at the current state of division and I see some fights happen in the near future.
I'll start with the UFC welterweight champion Georges "Rush" St Pierre. George is huge for a fighter of 170 pounds. He stands 5'10 "and is 25. He goes into every fight in spectacular form and ready for war. Fortunately for George, Most opponents are not ready for the kind of strength, size and skills he brings to the Octagon. St Peter is a brilliant striker, using its full height for both punches and kicks. It brings strikes from all angles and moves in and out of range of his opponents well. I do not really believe that Georges St-Pierre has real threats to his title at 170 pounds, but I always look forward to his next match against Matt "The Terror" Serra and also wants to see Georges St-Pierre vs. Diego Sanchez in the future. The whole world is waiting for the rubber match with Matt Hughes, but Hughes needs to work on his striking and strategy before entering the ring with St. Pierre again.
Diego "The Nightmare Sanchez is primarily a wrestler, but also has excellent striking and devastating knees. I think Diego is the only fighter to £ 170, which can give a track to St Peter's real money. Diego's bread and butter is his ferocious take downs. He charges the enemy in literally the cage and threw him to the mat. I see Diego Sanchez fight Matt Hughes as their styles are very similar and I think it would be a career defining fight for Diego if he beats Matt. I would also like to see Diego Sanchez Matt Serra fight as I think their styles (Matt Serra is a great BJJ fighter) would make for a nice game up.
You can not mention the 170 pound welterweight division to the UFC, not to mention that former champion Matt Hughes. Matt sets strength, talent and heart in the octagon and deserves another shot as St Peter. The only question is when should Matt make this move? I think it would be in the best interests of Matt Hughes to take one or two fights before facing St. Pierre again. The victory against two quality opponents could boost the confidence Matt Hughes and remind him why he is the most dominant welterweight in UFC history. The fighter that I really want to see Matt face before he will face St. Pierre is again Diego Sanchez. I already explained why I want to see this fight with both fighters are as popular as they are, he would use big fan!
I like watching the fight against Matt Serra. No matter who he fights a fighter first order or even that the weight class he fights in. Matt Serra is also a combatant of his ground technique as the UFC has ever seen. I think at 155 pounds (lightweight) Sean Sherk give it a real run for its money and could be a long time holder of the belt. At welterweight, however, it is simply not physically shot. He did not live up to strike with George St-Pierre-et did not overcome the size of Matt Hughes. That said, there is no love lost between Matt Serra and Matt Hughes and I would love to see these two go to it. Matt Serra had nice things to say about Hughes Opinionated season of The Ultimate Fighter 4, I would like to see if these two elements can also be exciting in the ring as they are outside.
Since BJ Penn is apparently moving to his correct weight class, light, it seems almost inappropriate put into fighting for his dream, to 170 pounds. However, I would like to see BJ Penn fight against the top fighter in the world. This is the order I would like to see these fights.
1) BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk at lightweight
2) BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez at welterweight
3) BJ Penn vs Matt Hughes to welterweight
4) BJ Penn vs. Georges St. Pierre at welterweight
To my ultimate dream fight BJ Penn (which will never happen) vs. BJ Penn Takenori Gomi either in pride or UFC.
Finally, I wish to list of challengers to the waist of Georges St. Pierre, in order of preference combat.
1) Georges St-Pierre vs. Diego Sanchez
2) Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes
3) Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn
4) George St Pierre vs Matt Serra
There you have a virtual state of the nation address to the UFC welterweight division. This will be a great year for mixed martial arts.
