The makiwara is a plank of wood that is mounted to the floor of your dojo or practice space. The reason why it is so important for practitioner of karate is that it hardens the various striking the surface of the body.

A training makiwara first seems a little scary, since you are bashing a wooden board with your bare fingers. However, the goal of hitting the board is not to damage the hand. The objective is to harden the surface of each striking that you use in your daily workout.

The makiwara teaches the student a perfect form, because it is not very forgiving if you find the good from the bad side. It is very important that you have someone to guide you in your training when you start using the board makiwara.

When you hit the makiwara should bounce or flex back against the punch. You will finally punching hard enough that the board will flex 2-3 inches or more. Some teachers use it to train their students to pursue when they punch, which is essential to the striking power. The teacher held her hand a few inches behind the makiwara and tell the students they have to give the board strike the hand of the teacher.

Of course, this type of "game" is not for the beginning student, but it's certainly a good idea for graduate students to perfect their techniques.
