Metric Platforms

On 19 April 2009, "60 minutes", told about 15 million viewers to watch a secret and hidden fees in your 401 (k) plans. The problem is that the government is responsible Business Owner as manager, not the employee. In the past, nobody paid attention. Not now.

Then, The key question is: How good is the plan and am paying too much? An effective response is a deliberate process of benchmarking. Document sets benchmarks for determining the fair value of plan.

So how does benchmarking work?

Essentially benchmarking of good answers to four basic questions about the 401 (k) plan: (1) Am I really comparing apples to apples? (2) How I actually pay? (3) What value received for money spent? (4) Is the relationship between cost and fair value?

Serious answers to these four questions produce an effective benchmarking process. Benchmarking is critical to deliberate any person appointed as trustee in the complicated environment current business. All business owners with a 401 (k) are appointed trustees of the law. That we live in a litigious culture is now simply an axiom. What we do. Benchmarking can be protected.

Look at the fundamentals of each of the questions on four foundational benchmarking.

First: Am I really comparing apples to apples? The form of reference point is appropriate to ensure that your plan is compared only to those with the same amount of assets and the same number of participants. Farther away, the actively managed investment funds does not compare well with index funds, for example. Make sure your evaluation comparative includes similar investment platforms to avoid the error.

Second: How much will I actually pay? The all-in rate is important, but also determine the separate assessment for service providers, investment and participants. We all need a separate examination. What is cost management? What fees do mutual funds actually charge? How much do participants pay for the loans, distribution and other services?

Third: What do I get value for money? This question is often misunderstood. The metric values consist of three elements. The first indicator measures the success of the participants. For example, what are the participation rates? What percentage of salary deferred? How many contribute to the party? For example, may spend more in this category for education, but additional charges result in participation rates. The value of increased participation justifies the rise rates. The second value metric complex plan of measures and services of third basic plan of action. These last two indicators requires drilling the same way as the indicator of success of the participants.

Fourth: Is the relationship between cost and fair value? The word "reasonable" that matters. Each industry differences in experiences known standards of value. A 1976 Gremlin will not provide travel as much as a Mercedes 2010. The law regardless of "60 Minutes "populism, not the legal standard required of lower fares. Instead, the legal standard requires documentation that what the fees are paid, reference point as "reasonable." Only "bad" business knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. The law actually reflects a "good" business principle.

Benchmarking the 401 (k) plan can be as simple as following the money. In a particular 401 (k) participants put money in, participants invest the money and the participants make money. Everyone is important. So measure it. Honest measurement highlights a perceived 'value chain. " Transparency in all things leads to full fee disclosure. Full leads to the release rate measured value. Measured value leads to the legal standard of "reasonableness."

Benchmarking Your 401 (k) plan need not be a mystical process. Ask four basic questions and follow the money.
