Lukaku Seeks Inspiration From Drogba

by Ben Williams

Chelsea’s new summer signing Romelu Lukaku has been unveiled at Stamford Bridge to a warm reception from Blues fans. The Belgian player revealed at the press conference that comparisons made between him and Chelsea’s legendary Ivory Coast frontman Didier Drogba have provided him with even more motivation to make an instant impact at the West London club.

The 18-year-old was unveiled alongside fellow new arrival, Spaniard Oriol Romeu, a few days ago at Stamford Bridge and Lukaku admitted to the gathered members of the English press that he’s finding it slightly tricky to adjust to the fast-moving events of the last few weeks, with the player propelled into the limelight after arriving in London from Anderlecht, where he managed to score over 40 goals in under 100 appearances following his debut for the Belgian club at the tender age of just 16.

It would seem that the Belgian is already learning plenty from Drogba, who has a similar physique to the new arrival and also managed to notch up a stunning scoring record before making a big money move to the former Premier League champions. Lukaku, who has already made his international debut for the national team in Belgium, has been placed next to the extremely experienced and influential Drogba in the Chelsea dressing room.

Lukaku stated during the press conference that “to be compared with Didier is a very big honour”, while the other two world class strikers (Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka) who ply their trade at Stamford Bridge are also inspiring him during training.

Blues fans, meanwhile, who have been left concerned at the apparent absence of creativity and strength in depth of the squad since the start of the new season have high hopes that both Lukaku and Romeu will fit in seamlessly as August moves into September. Romeu was only recently brought across by Chelsea from Barcelona, where he made just one domestic appearance in La Liga but was very highly rated by coaches and staff at the Spanish club. With the stiff and intense level of competition in Barcelona’s talented squad thought to be the sole reason why the youngster wasn’t picked with more regularity by the Barca boss, Chelsea could yet reap the benefits from an injection of energy and youth in their attacking ranks.
