With so many diets available on the market numbering into the thousands it is hard to choose which one to use. Many of them seem to offer the same promises: long lasting health gains, massive weight loss and overnight results. It seems that today’s fitness industry is becoming less concerned with real long lasting results and more with instant short lived gains. Many of these diets it seems are being sold with outlandish claims based on nothing more than broken promises or outright lies. Therefore to protect yourself and ensure that the diet you choose is the right one for you, a degree of research is required before you plump for one of the many diets available. This guide has been produced to help you understand the things you should be looking for in a diet and the things you should not.
With many diets being sold with adverts of before and after pictures showing people in great shape, it would be wise to not take them at face value. Some diet companies have been known to use pregnant women as their “before” subjects and then show them again after the birth looking in great shape. Now while some of these may in fact be genuine it is impossible to tell and they should all be treated as a biased source of information. The best diets to look for are the ones that are backed up by scientific research gained through controlled tests.
When you’re looking for signs of a great diet, look outside of the typical sources. In their advertisements, many diet companies offer testimonials and quotes. While these can sometimes be an effective gauge of how well the diet works, you need to consider two things:
1. They could be paid testimonials.
2. One persons experience may be different than your own.
The second factor is especially important. With genetics playing such a key role in weight loss, it’s difficult to take someone else’s experience as a guarantee that you’ll have the same. The only testimonial that guarantees results is your own.
Last but not least, look for a diet that isn’t based 100% on the use of a supplement product. While food supplements do have their place in dieting they should not take up the bulk of your diet. Instead look for a diet which incorporates all of the main food groups. If you do use a diet based almost entirely around supplements you can bet it’s a sure way to get back almost all of the weight lost once you finish the diet. All the best diets are ones that include a portion of your standard diet and lifestyle plan.
To recap: look for a diet that has undergone some form of controlled testing, has third party verification and contains all of the major food groups. Choosing a good diet, while seemingly impossible at first isn’t in fact all that difficult provided you follow these simple principles. Make sure that when choosing a diet it’s one that will ensure you benefit from long term health changes and not one that works only whilst on the diet itself.
