I'm sure many of you remember the scene in the movie "Presidio" were Sean Connery's character decimates the ass in the bar with nothing more than his thumb!

Some of you may remember Andy Adam's book on Ninjutsu highlighting Hatsumi. Several photos show packaging intense natural weapons, including "boshiken" or thumb fist. One photo in particular impressed me. Who has shown a small flat stone be broken by a "thumb" jab.

Sykes, it was reported, had a huge amount of grip and hand strength. It was apparently very fond of thumb "jab. If this is not a basic method, since conditioning on a period of time is required, it was still favored a "personal" of his weapon.

Put the rock in the form of your business "thumb jab" punch, place the pulp of the thumb on the rock and PUSH. Try to push / push the stone right through the foam. Do not knock it! Just many repetitions of the push FORCEFUL! Repeat the again and again. Over time, you will be able to hit the rock and RAM it fair to bottom towards the bottom of thick foam cushion.

Other good exercises such as the "inch" hook push up on bricks or cinder blocks can be added and all other personal favorites, but the exercise as described above is about as specific to the thumb "JAB you can get.

I train thumb in many uses:

Boshiken – Thumb jab

Boshiken – Thumb Knuckle style Uechi

Oyayubiken – Thumb Knuckle fist

ToHot – Sword hand tip (hook inch)

Jeang Sun – Palm strike with thumb jab. In Fushan Wing Chun as taught by Sifu Chong.

Ying Jow – Eagle Claw thumb crush / gouge

In excellent treatise Dr. Ernst Jokl on scientific and medical aspects of boxing blows, he describes the "old" street fighter's trick of pushing the thumb extended in the carotid artery and causing a knockout. It also details some jiu "-jitsu" Loved the edge of the hand.

All weapons above may be formed on the makiwara. Just start EASY. And ……………… keep a bottle "New Skin" on hand.

Here is another "good": get a block of cinder. Place them how long in front of you. Open hands, and "hook" in inch openings at each end of the block. Apply pressure outwards with THUMBS Alone and lift and hold. Repeat a few dozens.

Also any king of "pinch" grip work is also very good!
