For the first time, high speed internet is being delivered to thousands of homes and small businesses in rural areas of the continental United States. This has been made possible with broadband satellite internet access and in fact broadband satellite is fast becoming a very popular kind of broadband internet.
Although high speed internet is pretty much a given in cities, rural residents have been left without being able to get cable internet or DSL. All that has changed with the emergence of satellite internet.
The infrastructure to support cable or DSL is not being installed in areas where there are not enough customers to turn a profit in a reasonable period of time. That leaves rural customers putting up with dialup.
But with satellite internet, high speed internet can reach people in all regions of the country. Since the satellite is already in orbit the only equipment needed by the user is a dish and modem. Compared to DSL or cable the cost for this equipment is negligible so satellite internet is affordable for the average family.
If given a choice, the best high speed internet would be DSL or cable. But broadband satellite internet access is not far behind, especially if compared to slow dial-up.
There are some disadvantages to a satellite internet system. For instance, stormy weather can affect connectivity for the duration of the stormy weather. However, once the storm passes, the system generally recovers quickly. It’s just something you have to put up with.
One other disadvantage is what is referred to as latency or how much time is needed for the signal to go from the user to the orbiting satellite. Latency can interfere with VoIP as well as live interactive gaming because of the delay.
Every other part of the high speed experience can be enjoyed, from watching videos online, to sharing and viewing photos, to quick web page loading and fast downloading, and much more.
As you can see there are both advantages and disadvantages to broadband satellite internet access. But when the alternative is dial up internet, the disadvantages can easily be overlooked.
