Identifying Various Social Anxiety Symptoms

Social anxiety disorder is a condition where everyday interactions cause fear and the inability to relate normally with other people. This may include being unable to dine with friends or go anywhere there are strangers. There are a number of social anxiety symptoms, which are easy to identify with someone who has this condition.

These symptoms are emotional, behavioral and physical. They will include intense fear of being judged, of how they look to others, worry about being humiliated and avoiding anything that will make them the center of attention. Physical symptoms usually include such things as trembling, shaky voice, palpitations, cold clammy hands, profuse sweating, blushing and similar things. Other indications are hypersensitivity to criticism, low self-esteem and difficulty being forceful.

Research has identified genetics, biochemistry and fear responses as causative of this condition. The disorder has, in some cases, found to be a family trait with other members having the same problem. One’s environment can also contribute to the condition.

By research and testing, both fear responses and biochemistry have been traced to an imbalance in the brain. Treatment for these specific conditions is by medication. However, an overnight cure should not be expected, as it often takes a long time to get such a person back in the activities of everyday life, which will require extra effort on their part.

Effective treatments are available for people with this problem. These include cognitive behavioral therapy, medication and learning positive ways to cope with social interaction. This condition differs from those in which people become nervous when asked to give a speech or associate with the public. Social anxiety is much more severe and will disrupt one’s life, as well as that of immediate family, causing distress and hindering daily activities.

Psychotherapy has been used for a number of years to help people who have this condition. It teaches the patient to control their anxiety through thought processes that give reinforcement to coping with or eliminating the problem. Relaxation and behavior modification is the basis of this treatment.

A physician usually prescribes medication for this disorder which includes inhibitors, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications or beta blockers. Usually these are prescribed in small doses to begin with, to make sure they can be tolerated. The amazing thing about this disorder is that it sometimes fades away over time without medication or therapy.

When this anxiety is severe, it is important to seek some relief. This might be found in psychotherapy, medication or other means. Other means would include such things as support groups where people with similar problems have found ways to work through them. In addition, learning self-coping methods by doing exercises or hobbies when anxious, interaction with people who are well known, having a well balanced diet and getting enough sleep are a few that are effective. Those who have social anxiety symptoms need to act quickly to relieve the problem.
