Hypnosis – The Truth Behind All The Myths

Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in myths. People either believe them to be falling in the domain of the occult, or don\’t consider them to be serious scientific endeavours. Provided below are some common beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It hinges more on the science of psychology and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others mostly refuse to believe in it. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not displaying enough mental strength to block the influence of their words. But that is not true at all. Even people with strong will power can fall under the spell of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.

Another false belief about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is completely aware of his surroundings. Hypnosis actually induces a state of absolute calm characterized by a growth in levels of concentration, and this intensified sensitivity helps the subject to receive new inputs with considerable ease.

Another myth, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. Although, the finding has some element of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers made use of the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable answer as different people come under different character types, and thus are responsive to different techniques.

Many people consider hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has no communication involved in the process. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not true. Trance is again a state of mind sans any communication, whereas communication forms the very basis of the hypnosis technique.

It is commonly believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause changes in appearance or in behavioural patterns of a person. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in abnormal ways. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural changes like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictions by ensuring a high level of inspiration in an individual.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a happy and satisfying life, and thus one must not pay heed to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
