Hurricane Running
Hurricane Running

After a disaster, sanitation and hygiene is a phase of survival that is often overlooked, with sometimes disastrous results.

Following a flood, tornado, earthquake or hurricane, the water sources which are normally harmless can immediately be contaminated. Septic tanks, sewer systems and watershed recovery water overflow and contaminate wells, lakes, ponds and streams. Garbage and carcasses of animals added to such contamination. People do not dispose of human waste properly. Sites for waste disposal, fuel and oil from submerged vehicles all contribute to contamination. The survivors are found, sometimes literally, wading in the soup toxic.

After a disaster, hot water is generally insufficient. Poor hygiene, sleep deprivation and the level increased stress can lower our immune responses and make us more susceptible to disease.

Conditions in evacuation shelters many can be as bad if not worse. Think back to all of us have seen the pictures after Hurricane Katrina and you will understand what I mean. Hundreds, even thousands, crammed into tight quarters is an invitation to the rapid spread of disease. Toilet facilities with running water and often fail in that request. After two or three days, refusing begins to accumulate as long as conditions in the household are often worse than those outside.

When preparing your household for a disaster, be sure to include enough supplies to reduce the risk of disease whenever possible. Two products who are always in short supply after a disaster are drinking water and toilet paper.

The following is a partial list of items that should be included in a survival kit.

  • drinking water
  • a first aid kit that includes additional elements ointment such as Neosporin, gauze rolls and strips extra.
  • a box of wet wipes, antibacterial, if possible.
  • a bottle of hand sanitizer, antibacterial, like Purell. It's a good idea to include a small bottle for each family member.
  • toilet paper.
  • feminine hygiene products.
  • clean white towels and towels for the face.
  • a alcohol or stove fuel gel and a pot large enough to boil water and wash the towels and clothes.
  • toothpaste.
  • hydrogen peroxide.
  • isopropyl alcohol.

In a survival situation, it is extremely important to remain as clean as possible.

The frequent washing of hands, or use a hand sanitizer, antibacterial, is mandatory.

Precautions More needs to be taken when handling and cooking.

When using water stored to be careful not to contaminate the bottle cap or neck of the bottle.

In a survival situation additional precautions should be taken to prevent cuts, scratches or scrapes. Whenever the skin is broken the wound, however small, must be treated immediately. Watch children closely. They tend to ignore minor injuries, a more fearful than they are sick. Many older people also ignore small injuries because they do not want to be a nuisance.

When you're in survival mode, it is important for everyone to watch others in the group for signs of fever, rashes, insect bites and other symptoms that they may not be aware of themselves.
