How To Turn Old TV Cabinets Into A Play Kitchen

by Mike Li

The TV cabinets of today are small, sleek, and designed to hold the slim plasma televisions which have become so common. They are almost nothing like their predecessors, which were gigantic and bulky with several different shelves and cabinets. These large objects may have become obsolete but rather than throwing yours out, consider transforming it into a new and unique play kitchen instead.

A play kitchen is an extremely popular toy among toddlers and young children. Generally, the sets feature small refrigerators and ovens and they come with tons of plastic utensils and dishes. They also unfortunately tend to cost anywhere from two to five hundred dollars. However, if you make one yourself you can ensure that you spend less and get to recycle some unused furniture.

First, study the layout of your old cabinet and plan the new kitchen around it. The shelves and cabinet placements could end up being perfect for the set’s play fridge or oven. Sketch out your plans, including where your sink and other holes will go, and keep it near the project to use as a guide.

Begin by removing all the unnecessary glass and shelves and give the whole fixture a decent sanding. Use a small saw to then cut out the desired holes but make sure they are all the correct size before you begin painting.

The original cabinet doors of the item could double as great dishwasher and oven openings as well. Procure spray paint that’s aluminum colored and coat all the doors in it. For the one for the oven, use contact paper or paint the glass to simulate the real thing.

Reattach all of the doors and then add any final coats of paint. As for the play kitchen’s sink, a stainless steel bowl can be used and old sink taps can be glued above it. Small plastic lids or coasters painted black can serve as a makeshift stove top and tiny knobs can be attached next to them. If you included a fridge, gluing small magnets to the door and frame will help make it more realistic.

Once the kitchen’s construction is finished, you can start filling it with fun extras. A large photo of your backyard can be affixed to the back of the cabinet to serve as a window. Next, hang small plastic pots and pans above the stove from hooks and fill the fridge and cabinets with fake plastic fruits and other foods. The kid in your life will thank you!
