How To Get Relief For Your Knee Joint Pain Problems

by Bert Clay

A very typical reason for looking for joint pain relief is knee pain. While some conditions seem to get worse with age, knee pain affects people at all different ages and can come from a variety of sources. It may be a result of constant use or overuse, injury or trauma, or arthritic disease.

To determine what is the best solution for your joint relief, one should first try to determine why you are experiencing the pain. The knee joint has various components within it to help it perform its function such as menisci, ligaments and tendons. Because it must hold up the entire body and help it to move, it is one of the most commonly injure joints of the body.

If injury to the joint is slight, such as a minor sprain of a ligament, treatment may be simple, with ice, rest and elevation. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended. Tearing of the meniscus, a common sports injury, can also range from a minor tear to complete tearing of the tissue.

Tendonitis, or inflammation of the tendons, can also be severe or slight. When the condition is slight, anti-inflammatories, rest and ice may be sufficient. Other times, exercises for rehabilitation may be recommended. If the injury is severe, however, one may have to look to surgery.

Disease can also be a cause of knee joint pain. This is often due to arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis, which is an immune disease, is one type while the other is osteoarthritis, a degeneration of knee cartilage. Very rare are tumors or infections.

Chondromalacia and bursitis are other possible sources of knee joint pain. A softening of the cartilage in the knee, chondromalacia tends to affect younger women. In this disease, as with tendonitis, ice, rest and anti-inflammatories can be of help. Another therapy used is exercises to strengthen the thigh muscles. Inflammation of the bursa, or bursitis, can be treated with ice, anti-inflammatories and immobilization of the joint. Quadriceps exercises may also be suggested for this condition.

There are alternative therapies that may help with knee joint pain relief. Supplements such as chondrointin and glucosamine may reduce inflammation and possibly repair cartilage damage. Acupuncture has been found to be helpful in relieving joint pain and improving function of the joint as well. However, these improvements generally take regular treatment over time. An acupuncturist may also recommend herbal supplements or plasters to put on topically.

Braces can be used to help immobilize the joint during healing and rehabilitation. And ointments containing substances such as menthol and eucalyptus or arnica are also often applied topically for joint pain relief.

At times the only treatment option is surgery, however the techniques used are consistently being improved. Whichever therapies you decide to try, there is an answer for your joint pain relief.
