In boxing, why did the referee seems to wipe a downed boxer gloves before him to resume the fight?

If the poor seem flabby, He stops the fight or is it oily cloth? I've never understood.

In the past, most boxing shoes had leather soles and could become very slippery. That being said each case boxers corner a little square box that had the rosin. The boxers would step into the box, so that a coating of the resin would cut down on slippage. Of course, when they stepped back in the ring some of the resin would get on the canvas. In the case of a fight, it was possible that the resin would get on the gloves. Rosin may cause eye irritation so the ref would sweep the gloves to avoid this.These days, most boxing shoes have a different type of sole and resin is not very much used to. But even during the walk to the ring from the locker room, the shoes can get dirty boxers or other contaminates. So, it's just a protective measure to prevent irritation to the eyes. Additionaly, it gives the referee another time to get a look in the eyes boxers for any signs that may indicate that the fight should be stopped.
