Extreme Disappointment – Recycled Yoga Mat Critique

by Tyler Jenkins

I give this three stars because although my hands and feet continue to slide, I guess that it helps me work a little harder to hold my poses firmer and longer and it is a very plush mat. I guess I need to scrub it down again!

So, go ahead and abuse it; the mat will last longer than your ability to hold Warrior 2. Can the mat be used for more than just yoga”

I purchased this mat for one reason and one reason only. It’s great for stretching exercises. I have practiced yoga and am a hard-core exercise enthusiast since I was a teenager (over 10 years ago), and I am a personal trainer for the past 9 years, and this is the best mat I have ever owned or used. I purchased this yoga mat to use for home workouts – I practice yoga, and do high intensity interval training – and needed a new mat for cushion during intense ‘jumping’, and one that will not slide around. I’m an avid practitioner, and in five years of religious practice, the Manduka mat was my fourth mat purchased. I started with a Prana mat that went bald around the hands and feet positions for down dog.

This is such a solid piece of investment when it comes to practicing yoga at home. I can’t even use my old flimsy yoga mats after being spoiled on this one.

If you do yoga on a regular basis this is the mat for you, there is no better. I bought this mat for my brother’s birthday (he’s currently doing the Insanity workout).

Anyway, the prep-work isn’t too onerous, just annoying. I bought this mat about one month ago, and have used it about 6 times.

I am looking forward to years of yoga. This size is the best, less weight, thick enough for the POWER 90 and P90X training. My hands don’t slip and the mat doesn’t move at all. Although pricey, it’s well worth the investment if you have more than a passing interest in yoga. I do now have a 14-inch mat section which comes in handy for elbow stands in another part of my apartment. Wash it to air it out some more Firm, good cushioning, very happy so far. I washed it as suggested, with a brush and soap, and let it dry in the sun for 2 days. It still has the slippery film on it, despite all that and using it about 6 times.

Well worth the price. I bought this mat about a year and a half ago and love it! Bottom line, it’s got some heft to it but it’s not non-transportable, as has been reported in some reviews. I’m all of 5′1″ and average weight and didn’t find it prohibitively heavy. This mat is TOUGH. I am quite sure that even if I greatly intensify my yoga practice in the near future, this mat will still last a solid ten years or more.

The average mats are about 1/8.” ottoman tray.
