Is it safe to start an exercise program while trying to become pregnant?

I try to think for the first time. I've heard that it is safe to exercise during pregnancy, and may even help with stamina during labor. I am looking to start a regular exercise routine now, and am currently trying pregnant (maybe even be pregnant now). I've exercised in the past but have not done so regularly for about 6 months. Is it safe to start aerobics / step lessons and swimming at the local YMCA? Is weight lifting allowed, and I wanted to start body conditioning class? I've been told that heavy lifting can cause a miscarriage. They have no programs designed for pregnant women. Any advice or suggestions?
