I've always been pretty good, I have been blessed with good health all my life and I enjoyed participating in many sports at a relatively decent football and cycling to name but two.

But when I was older, the thought of turning for my local soccer team, Sunday morning to play an opposition of what might be described as the missing link between Neanderthal man Homosapien and does not seem to have the same attraction when I was 25 years. I ran bike at a good level in my late teens and always loved that, but cycling is one of those sports that you must be totally devoted to or you fall behind, and with a young family, it was simply not possible to keep training until the desired level.

As I reached thirty I was fully aware because I needed a form of exercise that I could take part in that would give me enough structure and flexibility to push me to my limits.

That's when I decided on boxing.

I always loved watching boxing. I remember nothing of the fighting on television with my father as I grew older. I know that boxers are a special breed of people, after all, what a person sane not get into a ring with the sole intention of touching someone else, but do not get hit?
What I was not ready for the level at which to train boxers and what wonderful people they really are.

As I already mentioned that I am pretty fit, I am also very competitive, love to learn and do not give up easily. As I soon discovered, these traits are good to have as a boxer.

The idea of going to my local boxing gym has always been a little intimidating, I never was exactly how I'd received was the wrong end of twenty years, no experience in this sport, so when one of my friends that I met at my local recreation center informed me that he had been training at the boxing gym and that I should go along with him, I jumped at opportunity.

It was a decision I wish I had done years ago.

The place was fascinating. The smells, the sounds and equipment have been completely foreign to me, I was in awe.

The gym consists of 14 individual punch bags of different types, all for the development of different skills and a ring. I had never seen a boxing ring before and being the curious creature that I am I had to step inside. It was starvation!

I had no idea about the basics of boxing, when you see it on TV it kind of looks quite easy to obtain basic throw a punch, keep on your toes, move, not to be moved to block a punch, throw a punch, and so on, but you try to do that when you have someone in front of you that wants to hit both harder and they do hit, and remember to breathe!

Fortunately I have not had the chance to stay in the ring for long, I had to learn the basics. One of the coaches at the gym took me aside and began working on my work on foot, the most important thing to get the first right.

In the first week I went to the gym four times and although each time I was hurting a bit more I could not get enough of him. Soon I was ready to move to a circuit class held twice a week, where twenty boxers are tested. The circuit consisted of 16 x 2 minute rounds with one minutes rest between rounds you've been commissioned to undertake the two press-ups, shots squatting, burpees, star jumps or some form or other of Crunch / sit. From all this one of the coaches would call you out of the session for a round or two of work pad. I had never experienced any form Half Training hard as this before, but I loved every second of it.

Because training is so intense that you are watching how you live your life outside the ring, rel = "nofollow" href = "http://www.nike-trainers.com/The_News/Latest_News/Nutrition_% 96_A_Beginners_Guide / "> Food and nutrition is the main thing I changed. I could not see the point in training as hard as I was just going to undo all the good work.

The rules of boxing in the United Kingdom mean that as an amateur, you can box up to the age of 34, an age that passed me by before I was at a level to fight, but I 've trained as if there was a goal. I have never been cleaner than when I was boxing and I am now 37.

September years and I still go to training every so often. My commitments in life have changed as the demands on my time, but I always buzzing when I crossed the threshold.

The only thing that struck me and made me love more than anything in boxing was the people. All staff and boxers were such genuinely nice people it was really hard to miss a meeting. Before long I had made some of the best friends I've never done.

So if you are looking for a sport that you can adapt and boxing may motivate you's The One for you.

I try to pass on my musings on life and experiences in a way that people may find interesting to read.
