Ended Speed

Since my first car was a Ford Pinto, I've always been interested in the Ford Pinto explosions, which were caused by a defect design of gas tank provides a useful case study in approaches to ethical decision making. There are three possible approaches to bring in making ethical decisions, a consequentialist approach, an ethical approach and a psychological approach. In a consequentialist approach, the decision maker base their decision by focusing attention on the consequences of their action (Trevino and Nelson, 2005, p. 89). In ethics approach, the decision maker base their decision by focusing on what is good or evil based on shared values and rights of individuals and / or groups (p. 91). A decision maker basing their Action on a psychological approach may vary their actions based on their level of cognitive moral development (p. 115).

In the Ford Pinto case, an individual who took a consequentialist approach could easily decide that Ford has done and produce the car despite the possibility of having the gas tank exploded at the rear at low speed collisions. In addition, they would probably agree with Ford that the car did not need to be recalled a time he was on the market. A decision maker using the consequentialist approach would consider the consequences for the largest number of individuals and groups as possible and make their decision based on doing the least harm and the greatest number of good to all. Since data expected that no more accidents with the Pinto with vehicles and other stakeholders of companies would benefit greatly to keep costs down and get the car back on the market as quickly as possible, it could easily have decided that the maximum benefit would come to proceed with the design because there would be many who could benefit, and probably no more than the existing standards would be allowed injured.

On the other hand, a decision maker using a deontological approach would have easily decided not to proceed with production and / or recall the car once it was on the market. Given that this person could base their decision on a set of moral and / or the rights of individuals, they would probably argue that the car should not be produced unless the rights of the minority group which would be injured could be ensured.

The results of a decision of an individual following a psychological approach may vary depending on their level cognitive moral development (p. 115). If, for example, they were at a level which would preconventional probably agreed to go ahead with the sale of the Pinto and / or not to withdraw from the market because they were heavily influenced by others in society. They would fear of pain management or they would have hoped that by supporting the majority opinion that they have been rewarded in some way. Even if the person was at the conventional level they may still not have decided to review the chariot of the Pinto. While striving for "good behavior" They were strongly influenced by the majority of decision makers in society and not go against their will. They have also followed to the letter "law" which supported the case of not having to make a design change. Only if they had a highly developed postconventional or on principles of moral development would they feel the need to go against the trend within the company to enforce minority rights "apart from the majority opinion (p. 115).

Furthermore, I survived my 1974 Ford Pinto! God thank you, I was not rear-ended!
