Ended Boxing

If Roberto Duran was born with "Hands of Stone", Mike Tyson grew up as a child with a suppressed rage in his heart. Like many boys his age, Tyson was raised pigeons. One of the thugs days bullied him. Someone has beheaded one of his pets, to beheading bare hands. Too shocked to react, he looked at his motionless bird, whose blood flowed from the exposed flesh of his neck, legs shaking like an epileptic. Then he heard a friend scream: "Fight them!"

These words echoed in her subconscious for the rest of his life. As rheumatic pain, they kept on the back, bother his mind with the tenacity of a skin disease. As young Duran, the young Tyson was a frequent guest of the local police. And the NYPD, she also lend a hand in the introduction of Tyson in boxing. It was like a monkey turtle to jump into the water. Anything that suits him well. He searched all the possible outcomes for the psycho-social luggage piled in her teens in need. He found in beck-busting.

The parallel with Duran does not stop there. Both went to war with the intention of courting Bedlam, as if the devastation had something to appreciate. They were ferocious, aggressive and explosive inside the ring. As Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis and George Foreman before them, they have raised the fear in the heart of their enemies, and for good reason. For these guys, hitting people seemed a routine task.

Tyson began competing in amateur boxing at age 15. Even at this early stage, he has already shown some the habit of hitting people. He held the record for fastest Knock Out win ever: 8 seconds. At 18, he won the National Golden Gloves Championship-Division trucks. He turned professional at 19 years and rocked the world of boxing right now. Thirty-eight consecutive victories, all but 4 of them within distance. The four survivors, of course, had the good sense to use their feet to run instead of their hands to fight.

On November 22, 1986, he became the youngest champion in heavyweight boxing history. He snatched the title from Trevor Berbick, who could not take much more punishment after Tyson 2 laps. His knockout record of 44 straight wins on 50 to top the list of all time. It seemed a shadow of his eye could have knock its prey. Those who watched on TV, his fight against Peter McNeely in 1995, for example, recalls the ritual pre-fight in the middle of the ring where the referee mumbled rules and called on fighters to recognize the other with a nod of gloves. For a minute or two Tyson has not moved a muscle except for his eyes, they followed McNeely as he stretched his body weight shifted from left to right.

McNeely smiled for what the viewers thought coverage for fear. When the bell rang, he charged to Tyson and has been tagged instead. He was in the first round. There is another aspect of the story of Tyson however. Quite probably still a prisoner of his past, he easily got into trouble with the law. It kept him out of boxing in many ways his career, the longest being the one in which it was time to 1992 to 1994 if convicted on charges of rape.

This was not good for his boxing career. After defending his title 11 times in over 3 years before losing to Buster Douglas in 1990, he managed to recapture Frank Bruno 6 years later. But we knew that his time as a boxer is on the rise. Seven of his last 12 fights ended either in defeat or without competition. After Douglas, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Danny Williams and Kevin McBride beat the way he beat the rest by knockout.
