The old adage goes “you are what you eat” but perhaps we should be amending it to “you eat as you sleep.” For those who eat a lot of processed foods then it’s about time you eliminate them as soon as possible in favor of one of the newer, more health-conscious diets.
You may want to eliminate, reduce, or substitute the amount of sugars, fats, and preservatives from your daily intake of food. Not only would this benefit your overall health, this has a good chance of helping you fall asleep properly in the evening.
Eat a well balanced diet by following the recommended daily food allowance.
The trend nowadays is the mainly vegetarian diet, so exceed if possible your daily fruit and vegetable quota. When eating protein, go for lean meat only, and eat enough complex carbohydrates. Better yet, you can forgo meat all together, as tofu and vegetarian burgers can stand very well in its place.
Become aware of any food allergies that you have and try to avoid them. Your mental state just might be affected as well as your sleeping patterns if you have certain allergies to food.
Make yourself aware of allergies because this could contribute to sleep problems. Some common food allergies that are known to contribute to insomnia are corn, dairy products, wheat, and chocolate.
Try to schedule your last evening meal at least four hours before bed. Again, make sure you are eating a balanced dinner. Eating too much in the evening might cause you to become logy, so do guard against this.
Another thing you would want to avoid would be taking a nap between 5 to 7 PM – this can preclude quality sleep by making it quite difficult for you to “catch some zs” when you have to. As such, it would be a good idea to eat balanced – and eat enough – so that way you wouldn’t be tempted to satisfy your hunger with food of the unwholesome kind.
If you find that you are hungry before bed you may find that a small snack an hour or two before bedtime will help. This means avoiding the usual fatty and/or sugary foods, and avoiding meat or protein products.
You should also avoid foods that are too heavy or spicy. Light-flavored choices like cereal and milk or low-fat yogurt are a great idea. The key idea is to provide your body with a bit of nourishment to avoid hunger pangs and not overindulge in an evening snack.
As a quick reminder, you want to rest and relax your body while staying relatively satisfied in terms of hunger.
Drink at least enough water in the daytime. The daily recommended intake for water, according to most experts, is eight glasses or two liters.
If your body is well hydrated it won’t signal you to wake up during the night. If you regularly have to wake up to urinate in the middle of the evening, avoid drinking any type of fluid an hour or less before bed.
You can feel healthier in both body and mind if you eat a balanced, healthy and mostly vegetarian diet.
The target here is to get you to sleep regularly and deeply without waking during the night.
