Covered Bands
In our last of a three-part series about album cover art, let's examine a few controversial is back album.
It seems that a large Retailers in the U.S. swings much power and influence. As "John Cougar Mellencamp" in 1996, he released his album "Mr. Happy Go Lucky", a picture on the cover of Jesus and the devil had to be changed. Since it had no influence on the music and he was not obligated to cover design, Mellencamp and changed the cover, in order to allay the great aforementioned retailers.
Rapper Ice-T 'is the trip with his critically acclaimed 1991 album release called "Death Certificate." It seems an album cover shows "Uncle Sam" on a mortuary plate and violent lyrics Ice-T's invited to a state (Oregon) to enforce a nationwide ban on the display of the image of rappers in retail.
Alternative rockers Jane's Addiction "singer Perry Farrell stir caused in 1991 as well. When he put his artwork of the band album "Ritual de lo Habitual sophomore," his record company (Warner Brothers), were they are not satisfied. They released her and the sparks flew, and under corporate pressure, the group and replaced Farrell From simple artwork with a white cover and text the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of expression.
In 1997, "Aerosmith" released their new album titled "Nine Lives" a dancing figure with the head of a cat featured. The artwork, taken from Hindu imagery aroused the anger of some Hindus and the band and record company apologized , and then changed the artwork.
Alternative grunge giants, "Nirvana" raised the ire of two giant retailers (Wal-Mart and K-Mart) in 1993 with her Album covers and a song on her album "In Utero." The back cover of the release was changed to "Waif Me" instead of the real title of the song " Rape Me. "Despite the insistence of the band that had the lyrics of the song, in fact, against rape, these aforementioned retail giants insisted on changing the wording. The Retail giant also refused to have the album because of its graphics (the anatomical illustration and fetuses) presented model, so that a "doctored" version the back has been created for them.
The band "Beautiful South" is an album released in 1989 as "Welcome To The Beautiful South" and the original release image is a picture of a woman with a pistol in his mouth and a picture of a man who was smoking a cigarette. This album cover was done by the retailer Woolworth's banned because it could in its argument, they cause people to start smoking. The album cover has been replaced by pictures of a rabbit and a teddy bear.
Smoking was also the band "Arctic Monkeys" in trouble with the "censorship" in 2006, because of the cover for their release, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. "The cover sleeve representation of a friend of the band, smoking a cigarette was criticized by the NHS in Scotland. They made claimed that the band was "reinforcing the idea that smoking is OK," an accusation that the band is not disputed. In fact, the image on the CD itself is a shot of a full ashtray and the band's product manger, said: "You can see from the image smoking is not doing him the world of good."
In a sad tale of irony, the band "Lynyrd Skynrd" had their album "Street Survivors" (1977), drawn by managers after three band members at tragically killed in a plane crash. You see, around the first album cover featured a picture of the band of flames. The album was released one week before the plane crash killed the singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and back up singer Cassie Gaines. The lid was quickly withdrawn and the replacement, a picture of the band without the flames, was quickly introduced. CD reissues have restored the original cover.
With an increase in the sales of vinyl records and a new interest in album art, we should, and can expect more censorship, controversial album covers as well as of other legendary album cover another part of the Rock and Roll Lore.
