Boxing Mma

I am a thousand miles from home for the moment at the Australian National Titles Amateur Boxing League, and I'm enjoying every minute of it.

Right now I'm watching two 13-year-old schoolchildren Belting it out, and the standard is surprisingly good. The boys are focused, controlled and highly skilled for their age. And behind every child is a small team of older men – watch all movements quietly taking place before them, and care smooth their boys between rounds.

Yesterday evening, the boy that I brought with me had a fight. Mina is 15 – still a lot of schoolboy but with a physique that is increasing the proportion of adults. This was only his third fight, if the national titles was a big step for him. Even so, finding boys his age and weight (63.5 kg) is usually not easy, so we understood that here involved, it would sure to get a game or two.

Mina won his fight, and he was a courageous performance. He was outclassed by his opponent, but it went away. Then we discovered that the winner was the current Australian champion and it was his 70th fight! This certainly got the bug loss, and when the champion found us and told Mina that was regarded as the toughest opponent he ever fought, our son was grinning from ear to ear.

In truth, this was part of a number of truly memorable moments yesterday evening.

* I saw a 16-year-old gleefully back to our dressing room after the decision of hard-earned points. With both hands in the air, almost jumped out of his skin with excitement as he screamed "I need to call my father and tell him!"

* I saw another boy knock his opponent to the ground with a body shot beautifully timed. Like his opponent hit the canvas and the referee stopped the fight, the winner, instead of prancing around and celebrate his victory, knelt beside his fallen comrade and rubbed his back, then helped him up.

* I heard a former boxing officials (who do not know me) say: "I heard he is a priest around from here somewhere. We'd better watch our language! "

This memorable moment last "can be described as a" highlight "well course, but was rather a reminder of how far the boxing community is to understand what Christ and the church are about. Of course, the reverse is also true. Most church people have no idea what boxing is about, but consider that this is nothing but legalized violence.

From my point of view, boxing is a celebration of manhood. These boys become men and men support the boys.

As every father knows, there are not many places left in this country where you will find teenagers listening to even older men, not to mention looking at them as respected mentors. Similarly there are not many places where a young man can with Rumble his friends in a controlled environment, and thereby develop the courage and self-control necessary for adulthood. Everything happens here. "

I pretend that we have 100% success rate with the young thugs and misfits that we manage to head in amateur boxing. We are not able to do everything the world comes to us in a competition of course, but for those who do not undergo the necessary discipline required to reach the side of the ring Experience is always the same. Drugs and crime cases, grades improve, and parents are delighted and thank me for what we have achieved. But in truth, not me. This is the sport of amateur boxing.
