Tips for painting wood furniture black?

I have a header that is direct from the store. So perhaps it was stained and varnished, or what is what do. Basically, you have things in it. So what I do to all painted black? I was thinking just sanded down with sandpaper fine-grained and then paint it. But apparently I'm reading might not be so easy. Do I have to prime it? Do I have to varnish? Do I have to do something extra for that?

You need to sand first. You can not paint over varnish. Use an oil based paint then an oil-based paint. You can also use shellac for a base layer instead of primer and paint as you would on a primer. The oil-based paint adheres better and is more durable then latex paint.
