The development of free disk skin after large amounts of weight loss (greater than 75 or 100 pounds) is a well known problem that occurs frequently. While it may be a surprise to some patients losing weight, it should not be.

If weight loss is heroic efforts to plan or bariatric surgery, the damage has been inflicted on the skin are irreversible. Once the skin is stretched when is fully inflated (high weight), fat loss underlying support causes a deflation of the skin cover something like deflation a balloon. Secondly, extending beyond a certain point causes the elastic fibers of the skin to become permanently deformed. The elastic fibers (and collagen) are responsible elasticity of the skin. Like stretching a spring, the fibers are pushed beyond their limits of traction and they are no longer able to return to their spiral shape of origin. The combination of more skin is more elastic, which results in hanging skin sagging.

There are other factors that may make the condition of loose skin better or for worse. How much weight is lost, rapid weight loss has been your skin type (skin thinner stretches just over), age (older patients to develop more loose skin), and (breaks cigarettes, tobacco elastic fiber faster) are all contributing factors. Clearly, large amounts of weight loss over a short period of time in a elderly patients with light skin who smokes does not bode well for the rehabilitation of the skin.

Unfortunately, no amount of diet, exercise, or topical creams to restore skin elasticity. In other words, the excess skin must be cut and left the skin tight. This often leaves the remaining stretch marks (if present before surgery) and, with time after surgery, there will be some relaxation of the remaining skin was tightened. But this small amount of relapse is insignificant compared to the size of the original problem.
