Bjj Mma

I wanted to put some thoughts down on the Gi vs. No-Gi debate work outside of the article / interview that Eddie Bravo has recently.
I think the comparison between Eddie Judo with the IG and Greco-Roman Wrestling without the IG is brilliant. I trained both judo and Greco, this comparison is spot on. Both sports are designed to take your opponent down but they put up takedowns using mainly the neck, the neck and waist while the other uses mostly underhook, overhooks and body locks. Same goal, two very different ways of achieving this aim.
(The footwork is different in Greco vs Judo but I digress.)
On the ground, however, the difference between training with and without GI Gi is not as great as the difference between the takedowns of Judo and Greco. Opposite, there is a tremendous amount of crossover in the technique.
That is why these big names like Roger Gracie, Jacare and Demian Maia can train most of their lives with the GI on the ground remove it and continue to play without Gi. Maintain full custody is not very different with or without the gi, you keep your legs crossed. Once you have the mountains, holding is not very different either. What is different is the presentation of configurations and transitions.
It is where the difference between training with or without the Gi begins to make itself known. Sport Jiu Jitsu with the Gi practiced using the sleeve of the opponent and the necklace that supports the setup of the guard. Progressive grapplers training No-Gi using the rubber and overhooks underhook and destroy posture and set up observations.
Anything done with NG Guard rubber, etc. .. can be done with the Gi on. In fact, it may be easier but not as fun as your opponent can not hang on to your Gi to slow your game down.
This can not be said of JJB Sports. There are countless configurations and transitions performed in the JJB Sports you simply can not do No-Gi. I'm not saying one is better than another. Who comes to your preferences personal, that you loved to train or not to Gi Gi.
I will say that if you are planning to compete on No-Gi and MMA competition, while training without the gi in my opinion, makes sense. With each passing year the number of new transitions Tekke and NG being developed is increasing. As the new wave of young grapplers adopting tekke 10th planet and develop their own increases the gap between the two sports will continue to grow.
What is one of the differences between a BJJ competitor and a top level competitor?
The difference is how tight the competitor technology High Level. This is where the myth comes from this training with the Gi makes your shots "tighter". Training regularly with Gi make your Gi taken tight but as Eddie said, training with the Gi actually makes your game NG looser.
In general, there are basically two ways to grab. Make the weight pressure on your opponent by using melee or light, loose, with lots of movement. Both approaches have their place.
My friend Aaron Briley who introduced me personally trained BJJ with Rickson Gracie for 3 years back in the mid 90s. He said that Rickson would go back and forth overwhelming that you just could not deal lightly with a movement where we could barely feel it touch you, but he still had control of the position of you in transition.
The style with slight movement is making a competitor like Jeff Glover so great. But it also works the clinch with his deep half guard and other areas of his art.
The true genius of the 10th planet is the conscious development of "tight" with the game of No-Gi. It's just like with the IG. Tightness allows you to control your opponent so it becomes a game of inches. This is what the rubber and other tekke 10th planet led in the game No-Gi.
I'm not saying one approach is better than another. You should want to develop both in order to be well rounded. The melee game and more open. But I like the fact that people using the principles Planet 10th and Tekke are able to hold their own competition, even against the more experienced opponents.
