"Ballet Shoes" was originally published in 1937. This film is a 2007 BBC Northern Ireland production with Eileen Atkins, Peter Bowles, Richard Griffiths, Gemma Jones and Harriet Walter.
Fossils are 3 orphans "collected" by Great Uncle Matthew (referred to as Gum by the girls). They grow as an unconventional family who live in London in 1930. Sylvia, the niece of the gum is left in the house of gum to raise girls with her Nana.

Gum travels the world, and his absences became longer and longer. The household is short of capital, and Sylvia takes in boarders. She welcomes the girls of the Academy Dance and Stage Training to continue their education and prepare them to earn a comfortable living. Three ambitious young women discover their personal vocation and work hard to achieve their dreams.

Posy, the youngest daughter, were collected by the gum with a pair of pink satin slippers, pointe, a poor young mother who could not care for a baby while classical dance for a living. Despite the title, most of the story deals with Pauline and her development career as an actor. "Ballet Shoes" focuses on girls' devotion to their families. They renew periodically vow to be loyal to each other.

Residents in the house are colored gum, humans who become part of the family spirit. The film is inspired and energetic. Theater, in London in the 30s are beautifully presented. Pauline rises in demand to become a young employee with a strong sense of responsibility to her sisters, Aunt Sylvia and Nana. All "good" win, and the hopes and dreams are fulfilled for all.

"Ballet Shoes" is one of a series of "shoes" books Noel Streatfeild, but remained in the position most popular since 1937. It is an entertaining family film for all ages.
