Are those Stun guns and Tasers Legal?

Stun guns and Tasers are most effective protection against assailants or any other attackers. But before buying one, you may want to ask yourself this question first: are stun guns and tasers legal in my place?

Tasers are stun gun products made by Taser International. Laws that legalize the possession or use of these devices refer to them generally as stun guns. While various states have different policies on stun guns and tasers, Federal law orders that it is banned to carry tasers on commercial airlines, except you are part of the crew. Airport officials are allowed to check if you are handing stun guns before boarding.

Airlines are not the only place where stun guns are banned. Most states totally prohibited the possession of tasers on school grounds.

Maybe you watched some videos show law enforcement official using tasers against individuals or crowded of rioters. Are police tasers legal? Yes, it is legal for police in some states and counties to carry and use tasers as non-lethal substitute when controlling law breakers. In California and New York, for instance, law enforcements officers are authorized to carry and use tasers. These weapons are used in situations where suspects are deemed a warning to police officials or the public. The police, however, are not free to use stun guns carelessly. When they use tasers or stun guns in situation that don’t need them, officers are liable to face charges.

Various states prohibit their citizens to carry or use stun guns in public. There are states that home use of stun guns and tasers are allowed but prohibited to carry in public. Firearm regulations of some of these states ban Tasers or stun guns totally. While in others, ownership and use of these devices are legal only for individuals who are licensed to possess or use guns. There are states where stun devices are legal but with some restrictions. Places that prohibit the purchase, possession or use of stun guns include: Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. If you live in any of these areas, you may want to think twice before using or buying (even through the Internet) stun gun products.

Several states do not consider tasers illegal although laws amending their possession are strictly implemented. For example: In Connecticut, authorities consider tasers legal so long as residents carry the stun guns within their own properties. In Virginia, it is illegal for law offenders to own stun guns. Dealers of stun guns and tasers over in Minnesota are ordered to include warnings and instructions for use in every unit that they sell.

So are tasers legal in your town or city? Possible penalties range from a fine of several hundred dollars to months of imprisonment, depending on your state laws so you might want to check with the authorities and your state or county regulations to know for sure.
