Ankle Wrap

An ankle sprain is a tear of one or more ligaments in the ankle. The most common type of ankle injury is a sprained ankle inversion which leads to tearing of the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. When the ligaments do not heal properly, or they heal in a supine position, instability may result. In the past, emphasis was placed on injured ligaments of the ankle after a sprain, but further research revealed that the leg muscles are also affected. Researchers at Brigham Young University and the University of Michigan evaluated muscle strength and response in 21 individuals ankled high and 21 low-ankled individuals. The group with weak ankles with a history of ankle sprains before and ankled strong group acted as control group. The study participants down a track hooked up to the sensory equipment. The track gates were built, which would suddenly invert their ankles 30 degrees, sufficient to trigger the reaction and record muscle response muscle (especially the peroneal muscles), but not enough to cause injury. They found that muscle weak-ankled group had a higher response slow compared to the group a strong ankled. The muscles of the group as low-ankled had less force. An ankle sprain is a tearing of the ligaments of the ankle. The ligament most commonly injured are outside of the ankle. This type of sprain is called a sprained ankle inversion and is shown in the image to the right. Ankle sprains occur with simple activities like stepping out of a curve or walking on uneven surfaces and are common in business sports like soccer, tennis, soccer, hiking and walking.
The initial treatment of mild to moderate sprains the ankle is very similar and the general guidelines involves a simple acronym. P – R – I – C – E – E
Walking protected: In the early stages of ankle sprains, when the ankle is still healing ankle lace or cast of the air are a great way to support the ankle and allow protected walking.
Rest: Rest is particularly important in the first 2-3 days to allow the swelling to go down.
Ice: ice for 15-20 minutes every hour or two during the first 2-3 days.
Compression: An ace wrap compresses the ankle and controls swelling. Too much swelling increases the pain and delays healing.
Altitude: lift the foot and ankle above the heart for the first 2-3 days after the sprain. Elevation keeps swelling and inflammation around the low.
Early mobilization: After the first 2-3 days of rest, ice and elevation, the range of exercises motion should be initiated.
Sprains Ankle Mild May we take a week or two for a full recovery, but most strains ankle will take about 6 weeks and full recovery may take up to three months.
