Buck Privates: Un-contemporary although engaging Army opus with Bud and Lou inadvertently registering. The Shadow: Lamont Cranston, having lived a life of ethical degradation, is “reborn” as a singleminded crimefighter with the talent to haze gentlemen’s minds. This adaptation of the venerable mush novels and cherished stereo show (carried to the theaters before in the late 1930s, and in a 1940 serial comes frustratingly close to performing, although flounders. Cranston is both inscrutable and boring. Incredible production layout and wonderful outcomes get lost in a film that keeps the viewer at Ann’s magnitude all the way through. What a waste of an awesome supporting cast! Cast includes Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle, Ian McKellen, Tim Curry, Jonathan Winters, and Sab Shimono. (105 minutes, 1994)
Lars and the Real Girl: Sugary film in regards to socially shocked Gosling, who buys a life sized doll and treats her as if she’s alive, to the appall of his older sibling, and brother in law, and the neighbors in their tightknit society. Luckily, an understanding physician (Clarkson) guides them in the right direction. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Kelli Gamer, and Paul Schneider. (106 minutes, 2007)
The Nutty Professor: Sherman Klump is a goofy chemistry professor who’s grossly obese. When he meets an attractive instructing assistant, he’s inspired to try his chemistry knowledge on DNA, reorganizing himself into a super stud. Eddie is appealing and persuading as the prof, and humorous as his doppelganger. Cast includes Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett, James Coburn, Dave Chappelle, Larry Miller, and John Ales. (95 minutes, 1996)
Kim: Exciting action film based on Kipling classic set in 1880s India, with British cadets combatting disobedient locals. Cast includes Errol Flynn, Dean Stockwell, Paul Lukas, Thomas Gomez, and Cecil Kellaway. 113 minutes, 1950)
Play Time: Hulot (Tati) drifts through an unrecognizable modern Paris of steel and glass skyscrapers. Scene and noise gags abound in this superbly created film. These assorted effects are connected by Hulot’s attempt to keep a meeting. Cast includes Jacques Tali, Barbara Dennek, Jacqueline Lecomte, Valerie Camille, and Leon Doyen. (126 minutes, 1967)
Commandos: Stereotype-filled war drama with typical structure; Italian commandos, led by a few stalwart Americans, need to secure a vital retreat in the North African desert before Allied landings. Cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Jack Kelly, Giampiero Albertini, Marino Marie, Pierre Paulo Capponi, and Duilio Del Prete. (89 minutes, 1964)
No Man of Her Own: Turgid drama based on Cornell Woolrich story of Stanwyck presuming another’s identity, later being blackmailed by ex-boyfriend. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, John Lund, Jane Cowl, Phyllis Thaxter, and Richard Denning. (98 minutes, 1950)
On Golden Pond: Fonda, in his last film, is no less than radiant as crochety retired professor Norman Thayer, Jr., furious at being 80 years old and frightened of losing his mind. Hepburn is fine as his committed, all knowing spouse who shares his summers at Maine lakefront home. Jane is his disassociated daughter. Cast includes Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, Doug McKeon, Dabney Coleman, and William Lanteau. (1009minutes, 1981)
